In Arabic there is no letter transliterated as “G”. There is only “Gh” for the letter Ghayn (غ) and “J” for the letter Jīm (ج). Here Gaib is better written as Ghaib which then gives it the meaning “The Absent One”, and the subtitle would thus be a fairly accurate translation. But if the word is instead transliterated with a “J”, as Jaib, and the word Lisan is given its literal rather than metaphorical meaning, then the Fremen crowd would be chanting “Tongue of the Pocket”, something far less mystical.
I wonder what Bashir Abu Jaib would have thought when the Atreides officer later says, “To shower in this hellhole you scrub your ass with sand.” Not a very noble thing to say to Duke Leto, nor to the richest camel trader in Kordofan, hence the meaning of Hajj Bashir’s honorific, Father of the [Full] Pocket.
